Barnsley's Learning Disability Strategy

The Learning Disability Strategy follows on from Getting a Life in Barnsley, a learning disability strategy 2001 – 2004 and Getting a Life 2 2006 – 2009. It is a joint commissioning strategy for adults with a learning disability who live in Barnsley. The strategy has been developed by the Valuing People Expert Partnership, on behalf of the health and social care commissioning organisations in Barnsley, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and Barnsley Primary Care Trust and sets out the joint commissioning intentions of these organisations for the next three years (2012 – 2015) for learning disability services. Membership of the Valuing People Expert Partnership includes service users and carers, learning disability service providers and commissioners.

Barnsley’s Learning Disability Expert Partnership firmly agrees with the vision of Valuing People Now, that all people with a learning disability are people first with the right to lead their lives like any others, with the same opportunities and responsibilities, and to be treated with the same dignity and respect. They and their families and carers are entitled to the same aspirations and life chances as other citizens.

     ‘Valuing People Now’

We would like you to tell us whether you agree with the things we have put in this strategy and the plans we have made to develop services over the next 3 years. We will be checking the strategy every year to make sure that it reflects changing needs and legislation.

Attached is the 'easy read' version of the strategy and action plan, a copy of the full strategy can be requested from:
